PENRITH RSL PIPES AND DRUMS PERFORM BEYOND EXPECTATIONS

The Penrith RSL Pipes and Drums have had an extremely busy but rewarding month during April performing in a number of locations.

The month started on the 4th of April with Steve and John performing at the annual ANZAC school service at the Paceway in Penrith. With over 1700 children and teachers in attendance, the boys oozed professionalism as they led a formed body of local Army and Air Force Cadets into the ceremony.

On Sunday the 16th of April, the majority of the band performed at the re-initiated ANZAC Sunday Service in Penrith. With 7 pipers and 6 drummers involved, the band looked and sounded impressive. It was our first opportunity to show our abilities to the RSL club directors and did we impress as we were visited by 3 directors the following night at training. I thank everyone for attending this very important occasion.

On ANZAC Day our band was split in two. Mark, Terry, Dave, Lisle and myself attended the Dawn Service in Penrith with Terry performing the crucial role of tap drummer during the silent march down to the ceremony whilst Mark performed the Lament (11 tunes all up) during the laying of the wreaths. On the day I was the Parade Commander and the Master of Ceremonies whilst Dave and Lisle carried the official sub-Branch banner at the head of the parade. Terry represented the band by laying a book on behalf of the band. The book will be delivered to Castlereagh Public School where Shane Watts’s (piper) wife is employed.

Whilst this was occurring the other members of the band(China, Ceilidh, Sheena, Liam, Emma, John, Tony and former band member Ben) headed into the city to perform for the Irishmen ex servicemen. They were later joined by Mark and Terry who went into the city after they had finished their roles in Penrith.

Overall the entire band should be justifiably proud of their efforts over the last month and a half. We should applaud our efforts but should be aware our focus must now switch to the up coming event at Berry on Saturday 27 May 2023. Members are encourage to plan early so they are available for the event and to attend as many training sessions as possible so we are at our best on the day.

Terry (Events Officer) is organising a tent, a BBQ and drinks for the day so be sure to pack your fold out chairs.
