Our HISTORY
The Penrith RSL Pipes and Drums (PRSLP&D) was officially formed mid 2022 through a series of events and circumstances. The band was originally embedded within a western suburbs pipes and drums before a differing of opinion and band direction created a splinter group. The splinter group, a small but conscientious group of people, then found themselves associated with the Smithfield RSL where members from all over the Metropolitan area would meet weekly to improve their skills and socialise.
When COVID 19 hit Australia, all association with the Smithfield RSL ceased as it was closed and it appeared to be the end for the talented group of individuals.
A discussion between Tim Badger, Andrew (China) Iverson and Sheena Lawrence early 2022 saw initial discussions of the band becoming a “sub club” to the Penrith RSL commence. Over a 6 month period Tim, Andrew and Sheena attended multiple meetings, developed a band logo, a band constitution, a detailed budget, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), a website, a bank account and a training uniform. We also developed close ties and friendships with the City of Penrith RSL sub-Branch (Veterans), Highland Synergy Dance Studio and of course the Penrith RSL.
Initial numbers looked very promising as the numbers swelled from around 10 to 25 members in a matter of weeks. The Penrith RSL Pipes and Drums played their official first gig on 25 Jan 2023 at a formal Dining Night / Burns night hosted by the City of Penrith RSL sub-Branch (Veterans) and have been booked in for a further 7 gigs in 2023.
The long term plans for the PRSLP&D is to increase our member numbers so as to have two full working bands and a training section and to be selected to play at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland.
